BUILDING SCIENCE 2

This module provide an understanding of building acoustics in relation to building design and construction. Students are introduced to the field through acoustic history, practical measurements, sound insulation, reverberation, and noise, internal and external to the building. Through this module, students are also given the opportunity to use lux meter and sound pressure level meters to experience illuminance and sound level. They are exposed to day lighting strategies, permanent and supplementary artificial lighting of interior, various types of artificial light sources,) and simple calculation to determine uniform lighting for interiors. This module is also integrated to architecture design Studio 5 (ARC 60306) to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through application.

PROJECT 1 : A CASE STUDY ON ACOUSTIC DESIGN

In this assignment, we have to form groups of 8 members and conduct a case study on auditorium locally. It was an ‘observe and report’ case study.

As a group, we must find our findings and compile it according to the following tasks:
1. Historical background of auditorium/hall.
2. Drawings of the auditorium (floor layout, significant sections).
3. Construction materials used (floors, walls, ceilings).
4. Sound absorption materials (treatment) used (floors, walls, ceilings).
5. Sound reflectors at ceilings or walls (first 1/3)
6. Sound source (in the auditorium – can be shown in drawings).
7. Numbers and position of speakers in the auditorium/hall.
8. Sound propagation (in the auditorium – can be shown in drawings).
9. Potential of noise intrusion.
10. Sound shadow area (if any).
11. Sound reading (dB) from sound level meter.
12. Reverberation time.
13. Compile information into a report & present.

Through this assignment, as a group, we were able to understand the need of artificial light under different environmental condition and learnt how to use the sound meter. Besides that we also able to understand the different types of sound in an enclosed space and identify the roles of each type in an auditorium. Moreover, as a group we learned to work together and produced a research report for the selected auditorium. This assignment was challenging yet beneficial for us.

PROJECT 2 : LIGHTING DESIGN

This is an integrated project with our final Studio 5 project. This project aims to integrate students' understanding of the principles of lighting design in the context. It will encompass on artificial and daylighting systems also will implement the PSALI design strategies.

Through this assignment, I was able to understand artificial lighting and daylighting strategies (PSALI). Besides that, I was able to understand and learned the method to solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues; natural lighting and site analysis. Furthermore, through the understandings gained, I learned how to design spaces incorporating artificial and daylighting when necessary.

REFLECTION

Throughout this module, I were able to understand the of application of building science as a tool to maintain human comfort whilst reducing the environmental impact of construction, with emphasis on energy efficiency and energy-saving by integrating day lighting into lighting design (PSALI).  I was also able to learn about day lighting, artificial lighting and architectural acoustics in general, including various methods and strategies to introduce day lighting into buildings and various types of artificial light sources and how to design rooms or spaces that are acoustically compatible with proper control of air and structure-borne noise impact.
